Interlibrary loan is a service for obtaining items that are not available in the NAIT Library. Items needed for study and research, such as books, government publications, and journal articles may be borrowed from other libraries. This free service is offered to current NAIT staff and students.

How much does it cost to use ILL?
ILL is a service provided at no charge. Charges may be applied for lost or damaged items.
How long will it take to receive my interlibrary loan items?
This depends on the availability at other libraries and where the item is being shipped from. Articles typically take 1 to 4 business days, books and other physical items typically 7 to 14 business days.
What happens if my request won’t arrive on time? (before the “Need By Date”)
We will send you an email to let you know the item you requested will not arrived by the “Need By Date” you submitted.
Where do I pick up interlibrary loan materials?
Books and other physical items on loan to you can be picked up at the Library Services counter. Articles will be sent to you in PDF format via an email link.
How long can I keep ILL material?
Articles: Links to PDF articles are emailed to your NAIT email account. These links remain active for 5 days or 5 viewings, whichever happens first. You can download the PDF article and keep it however long you want.
Books: Due dates for items on loan vary and are assigned by the lending library. The due date label is attached to the front of the item and is listed on your library account.
How can I renew interlibrary loan materials?
The label attached to the front of the item will indicate whether the item can be renewed or not. If the item can be renewed email your renewal request to the ILL Office at firstname.lastname@example.org or access your ILL account and click the renew button under the item you want to renew. This should be done before the items due date. You will receive an email indicating the new due date. It may take a few days for this information to be passed along from the lending library, but continue to use the item. If the label attached to the front of the item is not renewable you will need to return it by the due date.
Notices: When do I receive notices?
When your ILL material arrives, notification will be sent to your NAIT email account.. You will receive a courtesy notice 2 days before an item is due via email. The due date can also be found on the label attached to the front of the item or in your library account. If your ILL is overdue, you will also receive notices via email.

Lost or damaged items
If material borrowed by Interlibrary Loan is lost or damaged, the borrower must notify Interlibrary Loan staff promptly by email at email@example.com or the staff at the Library Services counter. The borrower is financially responsible for the replacement or repair of materials lost or damaged during his/her use.
NAIT Library uses Relais ILL for its Interlibrary Loan management.
The Library lends books from the main book collection for three weeks, with one renewal. Items from Course Reserves and Special Collections are not available for loan. DVDs are considered on a case-by-case basis.
Items are sent by Canada Post and Government courier for participating Alberta libraries. Articles are sent by email, post to web or through Ariel/Odyssey.

The TAL card enables you to walk into over 300 public, post-secondary and government special libraries across the province, borrow material, and return it to any participating library.
It is free to register for a TAL card. Current NAIT staff and students can obtain a TAL card from the Library Services Desk. TAL card users have access to the same walk-in borrowing privileges as local library card holders. Borrowed materials can be returned at any TAL member library.
TAL card users are responsible for the materials they borrow and for fines incurred no matter which library they borrow from. Fines must be paid directly to the library from where the material was borrowed.
TAL card users should report any lost or damaged items to the library from which they were borrowed.
Tip: If you do not wish to go to another library in person and you are able to wait for the item, consider having the library do the work for you. Just search TAL Online and request direct delivery of the item(s) to NAIT Library for pick up.

If you are not able to go to another library in person and there is no rush to receive the item, consider having NAIT Library do the work for you. Just search TAL Online and request direct delivery of the item(s). If the item is available for interlibrary loan, you should see a button that says "Request" in the "Find it in libraries" panel of the item view. (In order to see the item information, you must click on the title of the item in the search view). Select Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) - McNally Library and then enter your NAIT ID number, First Name, Last Name, Email Address, Pickup Location and then select Place Your Request. You will receive an email when the item arrives and is ready for pick up at the LTC Help Desk.
